By the way, Every laugh in this sad world is useful.

Well, as it was in my sig... I had it hooked up to the television (and it being a non-SLR, it could record and display live images) and pointed it at the TV. Normally, most devices are able to handle this (blocking out the "infinite loop" imagery that results).

Apparently, the CoolPix 5700 does not have capabilities of handling this sort of thing, so somehow, the CCD got ruined, and any picture I took with the camera afterwards looked as if the viewer were on acid....

Whatever you do, NEVER plug a Nikon CoolPix 5700 camera into a TV and then aim it at the same TV.

That's a quick ticket to a ruined CCD.
